slowly but surely i’ll be introducing our new home to tumblr.

the dude who lived here before us left a cabinet in the kitchen which he used as a pantry. it was one of those particle boards covered in a giant sheet of “wood” sticker. we pulled the doors off and painted it with a quart of yellow paint we got at home depot for $1. and now its my display shelf for my tea collection, teacups and teapots. i couldn’t get them all in one shot so my favorites are not shown here. another day…

i’m wondering how someone should go about receiving items previously owned by a recently deceased person. someone needs to write a book of etiquette on this subject.

i’ve been in this situation more often than i would have liked… more so recently. i have had a couple of family members pass away in the past three months, one being my grandmother. although she was from my biologically father’s side, and i hadn’t seen her in close to four years, she was still my grandmother. problem being, i wasn’t close with that side due to sticky, awkward situations and a lack of communication on their part. towards the end of her life, she developed alzheimers and we were told that she probably wouldn’t remember us so we should not visit because it would confuse her. understandable. so then she passed away and i came to find out they had since sold all of her belongings. i have some of my other grandmother’s costume jewelry that i love to wear and it would have been nice to have been able to wear something of this grandmother’s as well. nothing expensive, just something. or even the vintage flower dishes i remember eating off of as a kid… i’m sure those were just tossed.

my great uncle also passed away recently and i was told his late wife’s items were still around… i had my eye set on her clothes. she had great style and i would’ve killed for her wedding gown. it sounds so greedy (in my head, at least) but wouldn’t people rather these items be kept in the family? in both situations, i have later found out that everything was tossed or sold at an estate sale.

so, to prevent this in the future… i’m asking for advice. how long should one wait before asking? or is it taboo to even ask in the first place?
